Every solar system in South Africa is one of three architectures: grid-tied, hybrid or off-grid. The names get used loosely in sales conversations, and the differences matter, because they determine what happens at the exact moment the lights go out.
Grid-tied: solar and grid, no storage
A grid-tied system connects panels through an inverter directly to your distribution board alongside the grid. While the sun shines, solar carries your load and the grid tops up the difference. When the grid fails, the system must shut down for safety, because it cannot be allowed to energise lines that workers may be repairing. No sun means no solar, and no grid means no power.

Hybrid: solar, battery and grid together
A hybrid system adds a battery and an inverter capable of islanding: when the grid fails it disconnects and keeps a defined set of essential circuits alive, typically in under a second when engineered properly. Solar charges the battery by day; the battery carries the evening and outages. This is the architecture most South African homes and many businesses actually want when they say they want solar.

Off-grid: fully independent
An off-grid system has no utility connection at all. Panels, a large battery bank and usually a backup generator must cover every kWh the property will ever need, through the worst week of winter cloud. That drives sizing far beyond a hybrid system, which is why off-grid is an economic choice mainly where the grid is unavailable or connection costs are extreme: farms, lodges and remote properties.
Choosing between them
